Biomatik

Biomatik Migrates from BigCommerce to Shopify to Streamline Operations and Scale Global Sales

Biomatik has spent over two decades helping scientists do their best work—delivering high-quality biochemicals, enzymes, and custom production services to over 10,000 researchers worldwide. But behind the scenes, its ecommerce setup was struggling to keep up.

From lab orders submitted via email to 170 000 SKUs managed manually, Biomatik’s growth had clearly outpaced its platform. The company needed more than just a new website—it needed operational infrastructure built for scale. Their BigCommerce-based system lacked the flexibility to support complex quoting workflows, delayed payment logic, and multi-region pricing. Day-to-day operations were bogged down by workarounds and manual admin, stretching internal teams thin just to keep up.

To modernize its tech stack and eliminate blockers to scale, Biomatik partnered with MTN Haus as their strategic advisor and lead implementation team. Together, we designed a Shopify-based solution that unifies catalog and custom service workflows, reduces manual tasks, and prepares the business for global growth.

The Challenge: Outgrowing a Manual, Fragmented Tech Stack

Biomatik’s ecommerce stack was centered around BigCommerce but required heavy manual processes to manage orders-especially for custom products and quotes. Key blockers included:

  • No built-in quoting system for either catalog or custom products
  • Credit card processing challenges: inability to store and charge cards weeks/months after order placement
  • Difficulty managing and updating a catalog of 170,000+ products
  • Manual tracking and offline handling of custom service orders (~50% of total order volume)
  • Lack of international pricing and multi-market configuration
  • Shipping cost complexity driven by special handling requirements (e.g. gel packs, hazardous materials)

As Biomatik evaluated options for replatforming, Shopify stood out for its combination of ease-of-use, robust app ecosystem, and long-term scalability-delivering a modern platform without the overhead of maintaining custom infrastructure. For Biomatik, Shopify delivered what their previous stack couldn’t: flexibility, reliability, and speed—without the burden of maintaining legacy systems.

Biomatik needed a scalable solution that would:

  • Eliminate plugin sprawl and manual work
  • Automate quoting workflows where possible
  • Support delayed credit card charging workflows
  • Simplify catalog and pricing management
  • Deliver localized pricing across Canada, the U.S., and international markets

The Solution: Out-of-the-Box Shopify, Customized for Operational Fit

MTN Haus led the discovery, planning, and end-to-end implementation of Biomatik’s new Shopify setup while also acting as a strategic advisor in app evaluation, workflow design, and systems planning. From day one, our shared goal wasn’t just to launch a site—it was to architect the right foundation for scale and simplify daily operations.

We helped Biomatik assess key tradeoffs—like when to configure out-of-the-box tools versus where lightweight customizations would add real operational value. This approach ensured the final solution aligned with their business priorities, avoided unnecessary complexity, and remained cost-effective.

Together, the teams defined a focused Launch roadmap that prioritized core functionality-quoting workflows, credit card handling, catalog updates, and international pricing-while deferring lower-impact features for future optimization.

Key implementation highlights:

  • Quoting Workflow: The Quick Order Quote app was integrated and customized to support quote-to-order flows for both catalog and custom products. Quotes are synced with Pipedrive via Zapier, ensuring sales team visibility and CRM alignment.
  • Custom Order Management: For services requiring offline quoting, Shopify now takes over post-quote workflows-order confirmation, invoicing, QC documentation access, and shipping management.
  • Credit Card Handling: Shopify’s payment setup supports either upfront charge or order-specific delayed payment. While true tokenized storage for custom charges isn’t native, the team implemented a compliant workaround tailored to Biomatik’s workflow.
  • Shipping Rules: Calcurates was integrated to manage shipping logic for gel packs, dimensional rates, and hazard handling-solving for real-world complexities that don’t align with standard weight-based models.
  • Multi-Market Support: Shopify Markets is used to support separate pricing and configuration for Canada, the U.S., and global customers. This allows Biomatik to serve multiple regions from a single storefront with localized control.

Results: Operational Efficiency, Better Customer Experience, Platform Readiness

While the Shopify store is slated to go live by end of June, the current setup already solves key legacy blockers:

  • End-to-end quoting workflows fully integrated for catalog products
  • Custom service orders handled through a structured workflow with centralized visibility
  • Catalog updates simplified via bulk Excel import/export
  • Shipping logic aligned with physical constraints and cost models
  • Multi-market support configured for localized pricing and experience

Upon go-live, Biomatik expects to dramatically reduce time spent on quoting and catalog updates. With quoting friction removed and catalog maintenance streamlined, the team is positioned to convert more inquiries into orders—while focusing on fulfillment, customer relationships, and strategic growth initiatives.

With Shopify’s scalable infrastructure and MTN Haus’s tailored implementation, Biomatik now operates on a modern commerce foundation designed to scale alongside its ambitions. Our consultative and technical leadership ensured a solution that reduces complexity, resolves legacy blockers, and positions Biomatik to confidently grow its footprint in the life sciences industry.

The new setup not only lays a strong operational foundation, but also opens the door to what’s next. Biomatik now has the clarity and flexibility to test new markets, expand product lines, and continue scaling—without technical bottlenecks or disruptive rebuilds.
