Automating Personalized Print
at Scale for America’s National Parks

Eastern National is a nonprofit cooperating association that operates nearly 170 retail stores inside America’s national parks, with 100% of proceeds going directly to education and preservation programs across the National Park Service. Through their America’s National Parks™ online store, they serve a passionate community of park visitors and collectors—people who document every park they visit in their Passport To Your National Parks® books.
One of the store’s most popular products is the Retro Cancellation Sticker: a custom-printed, retro-dated passport stamp that lets customers fill in stamps they missed during past park visits. Each sticker is unique—personalized with a specific park name, location, and date—which created a significant operational challenge as demand grew.
To solve this, Eastern National partnered with MTN Haus to design and build a fully automated personalization-to-print system on Shopify—one that scales with demand, requires zero manual file creation, and puts the customer in control from product page to doorstep.
The Challenge: A Personalized Product That Couldn’t Scale
Every sticker is unique—personalized with a specific park, date, and location—which meant staff had to manually interpret each order, generate artwork, and compile print files by hand. At ~1,500 stickers per month and climbing, the manual approach was becoming a bottleneck:
- No real-time preview — customers couldn’t see what their sticker would look like before ordering, leading to errors and support requests.
- Manual file generation — every sticker required a staff member to create a print-ready file, which didn’t scale.
- Multi-sticker complexity — customers often order several stickers at once, each with different parks and dates, and every sticker needed its own page in the final print file.
- No automated handoff — the fulfillment team had no systematic way to access print files directly from Shopify Admin.
- Seasonal spikes ahead — with park visitation season approaching and active promotion planned, the team expected volume to grow significantly.
We’ve done ~1.5k individual stickers in the last month, as we start to actively promote the item and enter park visitation season we expect that number to grow.
The Solution: End-to-End Automated Personalization and Print on Shopify
We designed and built a fully automated system that connects every step of the process—from what the customer sees on the product page, through order placement, to a print-ready file appearing in Shopify Admin—without any manual intervention.
Dynamic Product Customization
MTN built a dynamic customization experience directly on the product page. Customers select a location, park name, and visit date—and the sticker preview updates in real time, reflecting the correct color, layout, and text. Multiple stickers can be configured and added to a single cart, each preserved as its own line item.
Centralized Content Management via Metaobjects
All park data, color groupings, and sticker configurations are managed through Shopify metaobjects—giving the Eastern National team full control over the catalog from Shopify Admin, no developer needed. The system supports parks across multiple color groups and caches data intelligently to keep the storefront fast as the catalog grows.
Automated Print-Ready File Generation
When an order is placed, the system automatically:
- Generates the final high-resolution sticker image for each item in the order, without the watermark shown during preview.
- Compiles all stickers into a single print-ready PDF, with each sticker placed on its own page for clean production.
- Attaches a download link directly to the order in Shopify Admin, with the filename tied to the order number for easy tracking.
The fulfillment team simply opens the order, clicks the download link, and prints.
How It All Connects
The storefront, metaobjects, and backend automation each work independently but connect seamlessly—making the system maintainable and extensible without additional development.
The Results: From Manual Process to Fully Automated Personalization at Scale
The impact was immediate and operational. What used to require hands-on staff time for every single order now runs entirely on autopilot:
- Full print automation — Zero manual file creation per order. Every sticker goes from customer input to print-ready PDF without human intervention.
- Scalable for peak season — Built to handle growing volume as park visitation season ramps up—no additional headcount or process changes needed.
- Real-time customer preview — Customers see exactly what they’re ordering before checkout, reducing errors and support tickets.
- Centralized park management — The Eastern National team manages all park data, colors, and configurations directly from Shopify Admin.
- Instant fulfillment files — Print-ready PDFs with per-page sticker layouts appear in Shopify Admin the moment an order is placed.
- Reduced operational overhead — Staff time previously spent on manual sticker production is now redirected to higher-value work.
For a nonprofit that directs 100% of proceeds to supporting America’s national parks, eliminating manual overhead isn’t just an efficiency gain—it means more resources flowing back to the mission.
